

Ask most people about colouring in and they will more than likely reminisce about their childhood and that is that, not a lot of people consider colouring pictures with pencils, felt tips or crayons as a pastime associated with grown ups. Unfortunately if you search on the internet for colouring in pages the vast majority are aimed at children or have limited subjects. So it is no surprise that adults when toying with the idea are a little put off, or made to feel a little guilty because they are being condition to believe that it is only something you do as a child, and not to be taken seriously. This is often compounded when a lot of colouring in pictures for adults contain lots of black blocking covering a lot of the picture almost suggesting that you need a little help with the colouring itself. The fact is colouring in is an art form that when done well can produce good quality pictures. It is ideal for those that enjoy art but lack the drawing skills that they would like. Once all the incorrect preconceived ideas about colouring in have been overcome then a new freedom of expression can be experienced, and the previous pent up artistic side to somebody's nature is released. There can be so much more to just taking out your pencils and colouring a picture. A lot of people will colour a picture just for the fact that they will loose themselves for awhile and that in itself is a good enough reason to do it, but it doe's not need to end there. As long as you follow any copyright restrictions why not take a tracing and transpose the picture onto thicker watercolour paper and see how different the picture can look while practising your watercolour technique, the same could be done on to a canvas board so you could try oils or acrylic paints. Using the colouring pictures this way allows you to concentrate on learning how to use the different media rather than on drawing as this has been done for you.
When you think about the fact that colouring in can be utilised extremely well in craft it is apparent that it most definitely is not just a child's pastime. when combined with other techniques it can be used to help create personal greeting cards or calendars, why not create a calender from colouring in animals or flowers, perhaps colouring in landscapes or seascapes are more to your taste. What ever the subject there is opportunity to create something that could be treasured by somebody while giving its creator the pleasure and satisfaction of doing it. You don't have to stop there. If you have a small gift to wrap then you could colour a pattern or mandala and the use it as unique wrapping paper, or use your coloured pattern to line a gift box. As the saying goes the only limit is you imagination.
